Reconstitute apricot and golden raisin in spiced tea
Did you know that reconstituted fruit makes a great oatmeal topper?! This Spiced Apricot and Golden Raisin Oatmeal has dried fruit infused with peach ginger black tea, vanilla extract, fragrant cinnamon, and star anise creating a real treat for breakfast.
The reconstituting liquid is then flavored with honey and maple and reduced to a light syrup–perfect for drenching creamy oats. This dish of spicy mellow flavors with bright golden colors is like having sunshine in a bowl!

Choose your favorite dried fruits, tea, and spices
When preparing this bountiful bowl for breakfast, I have a few recommendations. You’ll want to choose at least two types of dried fruit, a bold tea, and spices or aromatics that further enhances their natural flavors.
In this recipe, the apricots provided a hearty chewy bite while the golden raisins added tartness. The Revolution Sweet Ginger Peach Black Tea perfectly complements the apricot, cinnamon, and nutmeg notes. However, I encourage you to experiment with even more tasty combinations. For example:
- Chai tea with dates, figs, honey, and a pinch of five-spice
- Raspberry tea with peaches, strawberries, a spoonful of preserves, and cinnamon
- Blackberry tea with raisins, prunes, a pinch of allspice, and vanilla
- Citrus spice tea with mango, pineapple, coconut milk, and shaved toasted coconut
Exciting flavors. Endless possibilities!

Dried fruit can be sulfured or unsulfured
Although I really enjoy dried fruit, most of them are treated with a preservative called sulfur dioxide unless they are shown as “unsulfured.” I know that sounds kind of disgusting like your breakfast is a chemistry experiment or something, but it’s important to know the difference.
This is especially the case for anyone who may have a sensitivity to sulfur dioxide because it can lead to respiratory issues. So even though sulfured fruits are much more vibrant in color and softer in texture than unsulfured fruits, be aware that they are not necessarily the healthier option and should not be consumed regularly. - Gather your ingredients to make the oatmeal recipe. In a serving bowl, add the oats, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a separate small glass bowl, pour the hot water over the dried fruits. Add the cinnamon stick, star anise, and tea bag to the bowl. Pat everything down with a spoon to ensure each item is covered in the water. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and steep for 10 minutes.
- While the fruit is steeping, add the water and creamer to the oatmeal. Microwave the oatmeal for 2 minutes and 30 seconds, or until the oats have absorbed all of the liquid and are tender. Next, add the almond milk to the cooked oatmeal and stir to combine. Set it aside as you continue to prep the fruit.
- Once the fruit has steeped, remove the fruit into a separate small bowl.
- Add to the steeping liquid the vanilla extract, maple, and honey and stir to combine. Microwave the liquid for 4-5 minutes or until the liquid has reduced by almost 1/2. It should become the consistency of light syrup and will be darker in color. Next, remove the whole spices.
- Place the reconstituted fruit on top of the prepared oatmeal. Then, pour the syrup over everything. Sprinkle on some toasted almonds and add a dash of ground cinnamon and nutmeg. Serve and enjoy!
