Oatmeal is one of those foods that most of us grew up eating. Unfortunately, our memories of eating it have not always been so pleasant. I think it is fair to assume that it was most likely presented to us in one of three ways: 1) Super mushy, 2) flavorless, aside from a few raisins and sugar, or 3) from a packet. As a result, once we were no longer forced to, we probably turned up our noses at eating oatmeal ever again.
How to eat oatmeal daily
Well, times have changed! Now that I am all grown up, I expect my oatmeal to be as well. Since I was pregnant, I have eaten oatmeal nearly every day. I’m actually thankful that I have made this a new habit because it nourishes and sustains me throughout the day. This is vital for a SAHM (stay-at-home mom) of an active and willful baby. As you can imagine, eating oatmeal daily can become super drab, so I like to spice it up with fruit, nuts, sweet condiments, and/or dessert themes. In other words, I like to have fun with my breakfast and give it a gourmet touch.
Introducing…Royal Oats! (my Gourmet Oatmeal Recipes)
Royal Oats is my ode to oatmeal. The idea is to transform this humble grain into a relatively quick, gourmet experience that starts the day off with happiness and hearty eats. Investing this extra care for my cereal allows me to actually look forward to eating breakfast in the morning. The creative possibilities are endless! Plus, each recipe is really easy to make in the microwave (because who has time for stovetop oatmeal)!
Things to know about oat types
I prefer a hearty and textured spoonful with each bite of oats. However, I don’t want it so hearty that it takes five hours to cook (sorry steel-cut oats) or too mushy that it clumps together. I recommend that you stick to old-fashioned oats versus steel-cut or instant when making these oatmeal recipes. You have the option of making your oatmeal base (i.e. oatmeal, milk, spices, etc) overnight and then adding your fruit or crunchy toppings in the morning. However, I like to take the 2 minutes and 30 seconds in the microwave to have mine fresh and hot before adding my toppings. Please do what works best for your life, schedule, and cooking pleasure.
Learn to love oatmeal
Whether you are a sleepless SAHM like myself, a test-cramming student, an employee of a demanding job, or just someone who seeks to have a little culinary adventure in their morning routine, I highly recommend that you try at least one of my Royal Oats recipes to start the day off right. It just might change your life!

For the steel-cut oats body and flavor, try Bobs Red Mill Quick Cooking Steel-Cut Oats. They are ready in 5-7 minutes, have great flavor and texture. I add raisins, chia seeds, maple syrup and a touch of cinnamon. It’s been my main breakfast for many years.
Thanks for the tip! That combo you do sounds quite satisfying.
