S.Y.L. Tip #1 – Flavored Coffee Creamer in Oatmeal

How coffee creamer changed my oatmeal life

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was the moment when I added coffee creamer to my oats and oatmeal as I knew it changed forever.

I was about 6-7 months pregnant at the time. Tired, heavy, and hungry–the usual symptoms for a pregnant lady. I had already been eating oatmeal nearly every morning and was becoming bored with the preparation process. As I opened the fridge to reach for a jug of almond milk, I noticed my favorite coffee creamer in my peripheral view sitting on the shelf in the door. Historically, I had added a splash of half-and-half to make my oats a little richer and creamier, so I quickly became curious about the flavored creamer.

I thought to myself, “Hmm. I wonder what that would taste like?”

The answer: “Heaven!!!”

Basic Oatmeal Recipe

As a result, I was able to create a basic oatmeal recipe which has now become the canvas for my Royal Oats masterpieces. The basic recipe is as follows:

  • 1/2 c old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 c water
  • 2 tbsp International Delight Cold Stone Creamery Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer (which by the way is gluten- and lactose-free)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • dash of grated or ground nutmeg
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 c almond milk (Califa Farms Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk is what I like to use; it’s WAY cheaper if purchased at the grocery store by the way 😉

Low and behold, the creamer not only added richness and creaminess, but it also added a well-balanced sweetness that did not require measuring out any half-and-half, vanilla, sugar or sweeteners. The creamer allowed me to skip a few steps in my oatmeal prep as well as elevate my usual breakfast experience.

I’m curious about other flavored creamers

Recently, I was thinking about how other flavored coffee creamers would taste in my oatmeal recipes. I haven’t tried them yet because I am biased to the sweet cream flavor and I fear that choosing a flavor that is too unique would restrict my oatmeal flavor profiles. For example, flavors such as hazelnut, coconut, and pumpkin spice sound deliciously enticing. However, they may not pair well with certain fruits that I like to put on top of my oatmeal. AND…I would hate to waste a flavor that I don’t like. Consequently, I like to stick with old faithful (sweet cream).

Perhaps in the near future, I will try a coffee creamer sampler as an experiment. Hmmm. Stay tuned!
